Family Therapy

Family therapy, or family counseling, is a form of treatment that is designed to address specific issues affecting the health and functioning of a family. It can be used to help a family through a difficult time, a major transition, a relational trauma, grief, or psychological or behavioral health problems in one or more family members. Often times family therapy can be used in addition to individual therapy to support and promote holistic health. In family therapy, individual problems are viewed in the context of the larger family unit or system. Individual’s do not exist in a vacuum, and it can often be beneficial to address issues within the context of the family.

It is important to note that in family therapy, the term “family” does not necessarily have to mean biological relatives or a the traditional family. Family can mean anyone who plays a long-term supportive role in a person’s life.
