The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman as an approach to treating couples. It is one of the most empirically validated treatments for couples therapy. It focuses on thorough assessment of the couple’s communication followed by research-based interventions designed to promote friendship, conflict management, and shared meaning. The underlying theory of the Gottman Method is the Sound Relationship House, which has seven components: build love maps, share fondness and admiration, turn towards instead of away, the positive perspective, managing conflict, make life dreams come true, and create shared meaning. Katie Windham and Amanda D’Angelo have both completed the Gottman Level 1, 2, and 3 trainings and use Gottman Method Couples Therapy in their work.
