After the diagnostic assessment & evaluation, most clients will begin individual therapy. This consists of one client and one therapist working to address the client’s presenting concern. Sessions typically last about 50 minutes, but can vary depending on the client’s needs, the therapist’s theoretical orientation, and managed care. There are as many different approaches to individual therapy as there are clinicians. It is important to find a therapist that is a good match for you. Most individual therapy will begin with goal-setting. It is important to know what you want to get out of therapy so that you will know if it has been helpful. If you do not thing your goals are being addressed, it is important to discuss this with your clinician to find the best path moving forward.
